Human-Centred Product / Service Design and Innovation

Harness the power of human factors in product/service design:

The success and uptake of any new or updated product or service depends heavily upon the extent to which the system delivers a safe, inclusive, comfortable and positive user experience.

Leverage our expert knowledge of human capabilities and behaviour, to ensure your system meets the needs and expectations of users, while also achieving compliance with relevant standards and legislation.  We have extensive experience in supporting the design of environments and interfaces in high-reliability, safety-critical systems.

An effective application of human-centred design processes will make your system easier, safer, more accessible, and more comfortable to interact with, enhancing the user experience and acceptance, while improving overall system performance.

The Human-Centred Design Approach

1: Understand your users
  • Identify user populations
  • Identify user physical characteristics and capabilities
  • Identify user cognitive characteristics and capabilities

Humans are a component of all systems, even highly automated systems. People may be involved in designing, building, operating, maintaining, managing a system. Our Human-Centred Design process helps you to understand how human characteristics influence interactions with your products and services and achieve a design that performs to its highest potential. Products that meet users’ needs through the application of human-centred design processes and universal design principles are more readily adopted by users, and subject to fewer customer service queries or complaints.

2: Know your context
  • Identify human system interfaces
  • Identify the goals and functions of the human roles within the system
  • Understand the tasks and activities users will need to do with the system
  • Understand and document the context within which people will interact with the system

We use scientific processes and methods such as task analysis, anthropometric assessment, human performance checklist, workload analysis, human error assessments, and HF assessment checklists understand how people will interact with your system.

3: Usability and Accessibility Analysis
  • Develop user profiles and select a representative sample of users
  • Develop user testing procedures based on psychological and behavioural research principles
  • User testing studies completed by consultants trained in scientific methods and analysis

We expertly collate measurements of user reactions and feedback, actions and responses, decision-making processes, motivations, errors and performance.  This detailed descriptive data allows us to pinpoint the areas of product or service design that are most impactful in performance.  This  objective scientific data can be used to make informed decisions regarding design options.

4: Iterate

The human-centered design approach helps to deliver products and services that support users to achieve their best performance, while also providing substantial efficiency and safety gains for the operation. We support design iterations with practical advice to ensure that the product or service is:

  •  Able to provide users with a positive experience
  •  Easily operated in a range of contexts and environments
  •  Human error-tolerant
  • Compliant with standards

Rather than expecting people to adjust their behaviour to interact with products and services, which ultimately leads to inefficiency and frustration, we help you to design systems that are easy to use, and that support effective human performance.
